The Department of Thermal Technology and (originally the Department of Furnaces and Metallurgical Energy) was established in April 1954. At the time of its creation, the department was not specialized and provided the teaching of thermal technology and furnaces. Its founder prof. Ing. Svätopluk Černoch, CSc. prospectively assumed the necessity of specialization of the department, which educated engineers - specialists for thermal technology and furnace construction in all industrial sectors.
Prof. Ing. Svätopluk Černoch, CSc. held the position of head of the department from 1954 to 1964. In the period from 1964 to 1971 the position of head of the department was held by Doc. Ing. Imrich Repiský, CSc. From 1971 to 1986, the position of head of the department was held by Doc. Ing. Milan Míček, CSc.
In the school year 1968 - 1969, the Industrial Furnace field of study was established at the department. In 1977, this field was expanded to include the Gas Industry.
In 1980, the department was renamed to the Department of Thermal Energy with regard to its prospective focus in connection with the preparation of the study field of Thermal Energy. In the years 1986 - 1992, Doc. Ing. Dušan Holoubek, CSc. was the head of the departmentand, and since 1992 Doc. Ing. Augustín Varga CSc. was the head of the department.
In 1993, the name of the department was changed to the Department of Furnace and Heat Engineering. In the school year 2000 - 2001, the name of the department was changed to Energy Engineering. Within this department, students can acquire professional knowledge in two specializations: Thermal energy and Transport and gas utilization.
